CIQ "rootkit" likely not present on handsets outside the US (cnet)
A quick test on devices available in our office showed no sign of the infamous keylogging app. The Carrier IQ issue has been making waves on various US Web sites--mainly due to the fact that company in question tried silencing the developer who had found out that the Carrier IQ app was logging private data.A quick test of handsets found in our office (based in Singapore) showed no telltale signs of the app being present on devices--including a Nexus S that was purchased from the US early this year.According to online reports, Android, BlackBerry and Nokia smartphones are supposed to contain the app. Jailbreak hacker Grant Paul, also known as chpwn, also found traces of Carrier IQ on iOS devices, though he pointed out that Carrier IQ apparently does not have "access or communication with the UI layer where text entry is done".This is unlike the version that was demoed on an Android device by Trevor Eckhart, the developer who first highlighted the nature of the app, whose video above showed how the app logs keystrokes even on secure pages.He was then threatened with a lawsuit from the California-based company after calling the app ...
